IMG_2414.web_David E. Sandberg, PhD

David is Professor and Director of the Division of Child Behavioral Health in the Department of Pediatrics & Communicable Disease at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His research activities include the study of psychosocial aspects of short stature (for which he was profiled in the New York Times Sunday Magazine and several books listed below) and the psychosocial management of individuals born with disorders of sex development (DSD). David was an invited participant to the Consesnus Conference on the Management of Disorders of Sex Development. He is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of web-based educational content for clinicians caring for newborns with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (the most common cause of DSD in girls), with a focus on quality of life issues for persons and families affected by DSD. David is also developing a series of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) questionnaires that focus on issues specific to, and shared by young patients with DSD and their families, which are not otherwise covered by generic HRQoL. These instruments are designed to assess patient and family adaptation to the DSD and guide clinical care in ways that enhance positive coping. David obtained his doctorate from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada and completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Miami and the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University.
